Number the Stars
By Lois Lowry
Annemarie Johansen has a best friend named Ellen Rosen. They live in Copenhagen, Denmark during the 1940s. Ellen is Jewish which makes this a difficult time for her. When the Nazis begin “relocating” Jews, Ellen’s parents go into hiding and Ellen pretends to be part of Annemarie’s family. There are several close calls with Nazi soldiers. Luckily Annemarie’s family is wise and knows how to be careful in what they do and say. They have friends in the resistance movement who advise them and look out for them. One such friend is named Peter. Peter arranges for the entire Rosen family to escape from Copenhagen to Sweden aboard a boat with other Jews who also seek safety. The story of the struggle of the Jewish people as well as those who love them during the Nazi occupation is compelling. Lowry tells a personal side of that story through the friendship of Annemarie and Ellen. Students are sure to be enveloped by this award-winning novel.
