The Outsiders

By S.E. Hinton

Ponyboy lives with his older brothers Sodapop and Darry. Their parents died, and since then, Darry has been the head of the household. Darry works several jobs to make enough money for the family. Sodapop dropped out of school and works at a gas station to help make ends meet. Ponyboy is still young and in high school. All three are “greasers.” A greaser is someone who has long, slicked back hair, acts like a tough guy, is poor, and often times behaves like a hoodlum. They are enemies with the “socs.” A soc is from the other side of town, middle to upper class, with a superiority attitude. Ponyboy and his brothers consider the “greasers” to be their extended family. They stick together and support each other no matter what.

One night there is a rumble between the greasers and the socs. The socs are drunk and the fight gets out of hand. In order to protect Ponyboy, another greaser named Johnny, kills one of the socs. This leads to a turn of events that will keep the reader glued to his or her seat waiting to find out what happens next. The young boys learn how to deal with injustice, heroism, stereotypes, and worst of all, death.
