Charlotte's Web By E. B. White Charlotte’s Web is a charming story about a young girl named Fern who finds herself drawn into a magical world. When Fern finds out her dad is about to kill the runt from the newest litter of pigs, she rushes to the aid of this poor helpless animal. When her dad sees she is truly concerned about the well-being of this pig, he offers her the chance to raise it on her own. She names her baby pig Wilbur and dotes over him like a baby. This is the start of a special friendship between Fern and Wilbur. During the summer, Fern spends much of her free time with Wilbur and many of the other barn animals who play a large part in his life. When the weather gets colder and Fern comes to the barn less often, Wilbur becomes lonely and sad. Much to his delight, Wilbur is befriended by a spider named Charlotte. As Christmas approaches, Wilbur learns that he might be eaten at the holiday meal. To calm his fears, Charlotte promises to come up with a plan to save his life. By weaving words into her web to highlight Wilbur’s special qualities, Charlotte ignites people’s interest in him. People come from all around to see the “miracle pig.” He is even entered in the local fair and wins a special medal. While at the fair, Charlotte makes an egg sac and explains to Wilbur that she achieved her biggest accomplishment and will soon die. Wilbur is devastated to lose his best friend, but manages to bring her egg sac back to the barn. He waits for what seems like a very long time for her babies to arrive. When they finally emerge, the babies begin to sail away. Wilbur is frantic and worried that he will never know any of Charlotte’s children. Three spiders, however, decide to call the barn home and Wilbur is content. For many years to come, several baby spiders always stay in the barn and Wilbur lives a long happy life.
