Caddie Woodlawn
By Carol Ryrie Brink
Caddie is not your typical girl. She does not like dresses and doing “girl” things. She much prefers to run around outdoors and have lots of wild adventures. Caddie is brave. Her bravery allows her to have friendships with Indians when most others are totally afraid of the Indians. Caddie’s mother and sisters do not understand her. Her father, however, supports her and encourages her to be “herself” and not base her actions on other’s expectations of what a girl should like and dislike.
When Caddie faces a difficult situation with some local Indians, she proves that she is capable of making mature decisions. Her family respects her for this. This circumstance makes Caddie begin to question her own opinion of herself. Is she finally growing up and becoming the woman they all hope for her to be? This is a charming story based on the life of the author’s grandmother, the real Caddie Woodlawn.
