Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl

Edited By Otto H. Frank and Mirjam Pressler

This is the compelling true story of Anne Frank and her family while in hiding during the holocaust. Since its publication in 1947, it has been widely read by people all over the world. The diary chronicles Anne’s life from the time just before her family goes into hiding until her demise. Anne writes of the daily struggle to survive in a small “annex” filled with eight people. The reader can “feel” the tension as Anne writes about the fighting, hiding food, trying to be absolutely quiet for hours on end, political debates, and desire for modern conveniences. The diary is not just about Anne’s struggles as a Jew but also her struggles to come of age while in hiding in the Annex. She develops a strong crush on a boy, Peter, close to her age in the Annex. She may be in an extraordinary situation but she has many of the same issues as a girl of today would have such as her obsession with her looks, a crush on a boy, trying to break from her parents, and arguing with her sister. Students will be unable to put this book down as they read to discover what happens to all the residents of the annex, and in particular, Anne Frank.
