The Witch of Blackbird Pond Literature Unit
By Elizabeth George Speare
Kit lives in Barbados with her grandfather. She leads a charmed life and is quite spoiled by her wealthy grandfather. Unfortunately, when he passes away Kit is forced to leave Barbados and travel to Wethersfield, Connecticut to live with her only aunt and uncle. Getting there was not easy. She had to travel by boat for almost five weeks. Most of the trip was fairly uneventful. However, toward the end, a little girl passenger dropped her only toy doll in the water. Kit jumped overboard to help the little girl. She had no idea how this one little gesture would come back to haunt her.
Wethersfield is a Puritan town. It is extremely difficult for Kit to fit in and adapt to their ways of life. She is constantly getting into trouble of some sort. However, it is her friendship with Hannah, a local Quaker, that almost destroys her entire life. Kit is accused of being a witch because she is friends with and spends time with Hannah. Will her family and friends come to her defense and save her from a life in prison, or even death? Students will turn the pages to find out. A terrific, suspenseful novel.
