Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Literature Unit
By Mildred D. Taylor
The Logan family is an African-American family living in a difficult time in US history. They live in the time of segregation. Cassie is a young girl who struggles with the situation of her family. She goes to a school that is just for black students. She and her family are tormented by local white “punks” who wish them harm simply for the color of their skin. In the face of much adversity, the Logan family sticks together, works hard, and fights to keep the land that has been in their family for years. They refuse to give in to pressure from racist locals. It is a family of courage and pride. Excellent family values are celebrated in this book. Additionally, Mildred Taylor addresses critical issues from that time in an appropriate way that will help students understand what was happening in the country at that time. An excellent piece of historical fiction.
