Stellaluna Literature Unit
By Janell Cannon
After being attacked by an owl, baby bat Stellaluna is separated from her loving mother and left dangling on a twig all alone in the forest. Unable to hold on for long, she falls directly into a nest of three curious baby birds. This bird family literally turns Stellaluna’s world upside down, as Mama Bird allows her to join the family on the condition she behave like a good bird should. Stellaluna reluctantly eats bugs, sleeps at night, and doesn’t hang by her feet. Soon enough, it’s time to learn how to fly, and although it takes Stellaluna a little bit longer to get the hang of it, she enjoys flying far ahead of the others. In fact, one evening she goes too far and ends up alone in the forest again. Trying to behave like a good bird, she hangs by her thumbs instead of her feet. This gets the attention of some bats, and as Stellaluna tells her story, she is reunited with her mother. Finally she is able to be herself as she learns what it is to be a bat. She flies in the dark, eats fruit, and hangs by her feet! In the end, Stellaluna and the birds discover that despite their differences, they also have similarities, and they can still be friends.
