Island of the Blue Dolphins Literature Unit
By Scott O'Dell
Island of the Blue Dolphins is a survival story based on the true story of a girl who lived alone on an island off the coast of California (San Nicolas) for 18 years. As the villagers of Ghalas-at board a ship to leave Island of the Blue Dolphins to escape Aleut otter hunters, Karana sees her little brother, Ramo, left behind on the island. With stormy weather upon them, they cannot go back for him, so Karana jumps off the ship to stay with him. Ramo dies shortly after, and twelve-year-old Karana finds herself all alone on the island. For years she waits to be rescued, relying on her resourcefulness to stay alive. She manages to build shelter, find food, and fight off her enemies—the wild dogs who inhabit the island with her. This story is not only about survival, but also about the beauty of nature, the cruelty of some hunters, and Karana’s personal discovery.
