The Giver Literature Unit
By Lois Lowry
Jonas is an eleven-year-old boy who lives in a Community that is very tightly controlled. There are no choices to be made because everything is the same. He lives in a “family unit” that consists of a mother, father, sister, and brother. Children are born to “birth mothers” and then distributed to families who request them. Everyone lives in the same exact type of house and has the same exact type of furniture. Each person is assigned a specific job in the Community, such as birth mother. A job is assigned to each child when he or she turns the age of twelve.
Jonas has been looking forward to the day he would receive his assignment. Assignments are determined based on observations of the children over a few years. Jonas is surprised when he is assigned to be The Receiver for the Community. The job of the Receiver is to hold the “memories” of all the pleasure and pain of life. People in the Community take special pills that prohibit them from having memories. Jonas will receive the memories from The Giver. When Jonas begins his training to receive memories and learns how the Community really works, he and The Giver decide they must act and do something to forever change the Community. Story content is sophisticated and fascinating and will surely keep students interested from start to finish.
