Dicey's Song Literature Unit
By Cynthia Voigt
Dicey and her siblings have been on their own for a while. Their mother is mentally ill and left her children to fend for themselves. The book begins with the children having just been taken in by their grandmother. The children found her and she has invited them to live with her. This is a lovely story about family members caring for each other, trying to get to know each other, and sacrificing for each other. The sacrifice by the grandmother is heartwarming, especially when she tells the children that she is adopting them.
The children each have their own issues but, with the help of the grandmother, they are slowly working through them and trying to learn to be happy. Throughout the book, the grandmother receives letters from a mental hospital which is where the children’s mother ended up. Gram is regularly updated on her daughter’s mental condition. At the end of the book, the children’s mother dies. Thanks to the love and devotion of their grandmother, the children are able to cope and move on.
