Paula's Biography

Hi! My name is Paula Baucom. I currently teach fifth grade for the San Juan Unified School District at Kingswood Elementary near Sacramento, California. I have an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from California State University, Sacramento and a "Computers in the Classroom" supplementary teaching credential. Becoming a teacher was somewhat of a surprise career to me. After earning a BS in biopsychology (study of the brain and behavior), I just couldn't see myself spending my days in a lab doing experiments on cute little mice. I decided that the next best way to study brain and behavior was in the classroom (observational experiments only, of course). Therefore, I decided to pursue my teaching credential. I found that I love teaching more than I could have imagined. I also realized my fascination with computers and the amazing contributions they can make to the class curriculum and our lives in general.

During my years in the classroom, I have been able to successfully use technology in all curricular areas and have seen tremendous growth from students who strive to meet new challenges. If the thought of using technology in your classroom seems an overwhelming task, remember that starting off small is better than not starting at all! Once you start using technology in your classroom, you will wonder how you ever got along without it.

Although I have taken many courses in various aspects of computer technology, I have found that the best way to learn more is to "play around" for yourself. Seeing what works for you and getting tips from experienced "techies" will enable anyone to become a competent technology user. I have seen teachers go from not knowing where the "on" button is, to successfully using technology with just some clear support and guidance. Seek out other educators at your site who also use technology – ask questions and share ideas on a regular basis.
