My name is Barbara Pearson and I currently teach kindergarten in an inner city school in a very low socioeconomic area.    My experience spans grades K-6 in single and split grade classrooms in an inner city school, except for two years when we moved to Texas where I taught 3rd and 4th graders who were mainly from the country. We lived in a VERY small town called Daingerfield in the very northeastern corner of the state. I actually taught 25 miles away in Mt. Pleasant , which is where the WalMart was...so it was the place to be!  

My experiences were similar in that in both schools I worked with second language learners who were struggling readers and writers with very limited English language skills. I noticed all of the obvious differences that one would expect to find between country and city kids, but mostly what I learned is that kids, are kids, are kids!

Speaking of kids, I have an eight-year old son who keeps me on my toes!  He pretty much slows down to sleep and eat and that is about it!  He is into any and all sports, so I after school I am usually on a field or in a gym somewhere.  Dealing with him as a learner has been a learning experience for me!  He has helped me with my own teaching and my teaching has definitely helped me help him!
